Acupuncture is an ancient form of Chinese medicine involving the insertion of solid filiform acupuncture needles into the skin at specific points on the body to achieve a therapeutic effect. No drug is injected. The needles alone create the beneficial effects of acupuncture.
Acupuncture is used to encourage natural healing, reduce or relieve pain and improve function of affected areas of the body.
Acupuncture is performed within the practice of some regulated healthcare professions in Ontario. At Lead the Way clinics it is used safely and effectively by appropriately trained physiotherapists or massage therapists as an adjunct to the other techniques and treatments that are within their scope of practice. These practitioners are not called acupuncturists but rather use acupuncture as a tool, sometimes choosing acupuncture points based on their knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology, combined with their acupuncture training.
